All 33 Chilean miners were safely pulled from the depths of darkness into bright light, and the glare of the world media. The miners’ futures are literally and figuratively bright after the 69-day ordeal and accompanying drama. To help protect the miners eyes, Oakley donated 35 pairs of its Radar sunglasses to the mine rescue effort. Doctors were concerned that when the miners reached the surface, they risked possible light damage to the retinas of their eyes. Oakley, a California based company, donated the Radars with black iridium lenses in both Path and Range lens shapes.  This was the mother of all product placement gets this year so far.  CNBC reported that the company received the equivalent of $41 million in advertising time for news media coverage showing the miners wearing their sunglasses as they emerged from the ground.

According to Samantha Critchell, AP Fashion Writer, many agencies and companies around the world contributed expertise or products related to the rescue, from a high-calorie liquid diet, donated by NASA, to suppress motion sickness in the miners as they ascended; to iPods donated by Apple, which the miners were to receive when they emerged.

I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades,
I gotta wear shades

I’ve got a job waiting for my graduation
Fifty thou a year — buys a lot of beer
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades

Well I’m heavenly blessed and worldly wise
I’m a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades
