Somehow my siblings and I survived Roman candles and bottle rockets. My father would place an upside down metal garbage can in the middle of our street and invite everyone over to participate in the lighting of the most dangerous, illegal fireworks he could find. I can picture him in his business suit and wing tips scouring the back streets of L.A. In most other things my dad was conservative, but he earned street cred every 4th with his fireworks display. It was great!

The American flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes, 7 red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. I painted a large canvas painting of the flag for a friend and it remains one of my favorite paintings.

Happy July 4th celebration!
