Leonardo da Vinci

Tempera and mixed media on plaster, 1498, Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan

Today is Maundy Thursday so I wanted to look at this most famous depiction of Jesus’ last meal with his disciples. I have not seen this in person yet but it is on my to-see list. I understand it is huge (15 x 29 feet). It covers an entire large wall, very unlike reproductions. The original mural is on a wall of the refectory in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. ‘The Last Supper’ had been painted before Leonardo did this one but his version was the first to depict people who look real. My favorite part is actually the heraldic crests that appear at the top. Sorry Jesus, you look good too.
